Choosing Between 3-Tab and Architectural Shingles for Your Roof

You probably don’t realize this until it’s time for a replacement or repair, but the roof and shingles are not all the same. There are two basic types of shingles available. To know which type is right for you, here is some information about the two main types.

Architectural shingles

Dimensional shingles or architectural shingles are thicker and are available in a variety of shapes. Architectural shingles contain more asphalt and have a more curved appearance. When you use architectural shingles, you will get more visual texture in your roof. Architectural shingles are not typically recommended on roofs with a low slope. Architecture shingles are at a higher price point and have a more extended warranty than a traditional shingle.

3-tab shingles

3-tab shingles are commonly used in buildings and homes. This standard shingle is flat and very thin. Each edge has a cutout on the bottom, which gives the appearance of three separate shingles but is one piece. 3-tab shingles are available in a variety of color options but only one shape. 3-tab shingles can last 20 to 30 years if taken care of properly. Since the material is lighter, there is the possibility of adding a second layer of shingles rather than replacing the entire roof.

Which type of shingle is right for your home?

The majority of homeowners choose 3-tab shingles because they last a long time and are an economical option. However, if you desire a more visually appealing roof, then architectural shingles are a better option. You will have a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes to choose from with architectural shingles. Whichever type of shingle you choose, be sure to have a quality roofing company do the installation.  Call the experts at GDC Contracting Inc. for all of your roofing needs.
